Recreational Colour Levels

What are Colour Levels?

Colour Levels are how we track the progress of our recreational athletes. They are also used to set goals, motivate athletes, and offer a clear pathway to competative gymnastics should an athlete choose to presue it. Colour Levels are assigned by age at the beginning of the Term and then adjusted according to ability. Colour Levels are not expectations, they merely offer a visual way to celebrate progress!

What is the General Class Structure?

Class 1: Athletes ability is monitored and a temporary colour level is assigned.

Before Class 2: Coaches will adjust athlete groups if able to reflect ability. Generally, we’d like to keep colour level groups together.

Class 2: Certificates are filled out based on athlete colour level

Class 3-6: Coaches will mark with a stamp on your athletes certificate whenever a new skill is achieved and repeated 3 times. They will also be offerred a chance to ring the New Skill bell!

Class 7-8: Final marks are made throughout the class. If your athlete has not achieved all of the skills on their certificate by the end of the Term, that's okay! We can hold onto the certificate for an athlete who intends on re-registering and issue them an end of Term Participation Certificate.

How Do I Keep Track of My Athlete's Level?

All colour levels are assigned to athletes in Friendly Manager Awards and are viewable through the portal.

My Athlete Doesn't Seem To Be Progressing

As a parent/gaurdian we understand that it may be disheartening if your athlete doesn't seem to be making much progress. Something to keep in mind is that success is subjective and recreational gymnastics is designed to be, above all else, a way for children and teens to experience joyful movement.

Coaches are always available to address your concerns after class and we always encourage you to be an advocate for your athlete. When looking at progress, we take a hollistic approach, looking at all of the factors that may be contributing to a plateau. Here are some questions we may ask when addressing this issue:

  • How does the athlete feel about their progress?
  • What does success in the programme look like to them?
  • Are there any outside factors that have been contributing (i.e. stress from school)?
  • What skills are they struggling with? Does the athlete have an idea of why they are struggling with this skill?

We will never leave a conversation about delayed progress without a plan of action!

15-minute meetings are available to book with coaches to address any of your concerns. Please email centremanager@gymnast.co.nz to book.
